A new tutorial from YouTube gadgeteer Mrwhosetheboss will have you making your own DIY holograms before you can say, "Help me Obi-wan Kenobi, you're my only hope." Simply cut a piece of clear plastic (he recommends an old CD jewel case) into four rhombuses, tape them into a prism, place it on your screen while playing hologram-friendly four-sided videos and wham, you got yourself a hologram that will wow your friends.

It's not quite up to Tupac or MIA levels quite yet, and Mrwhosetheboss' version of the hologram is closer to Japanese fabricated pop star Hatsune Miku's reflection-based illusion than the Star Wars-like 3D projections offered by Chris Helson and Sarah Jackets' fairly convincing 3D projection installaion, Help Me Obi. Even the duo admits that they're nowhere near the plausible, fully 3D holograms promised by companies like Bleen (due to launch later this year). But no matter the scale, the effect is still mesmerizing.
